I'm torn - I think a good conversation inspires me more at the time but a song that I hear, or can play, over and over remains an inspiration longer.

Yes, but it sure doesn't feel like it at the point of loss.

Just one. Really? How about two? I've been fortunate enough to visit many of them but my favorite is the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The most awe inspiring, however, is the Vietnam Wall.

8. Which is more painful, to be disappointed in someone else or to be disappointed in yourself?

I think it's more painful to be disappointed in someone else. If I am disappointed in myself I can change what I'm doing or, at the very least, not repeat the mistake. If someone else disappoints me they may not want to change things or may not care that I'm disappointed so the pain continues longer.

9. What makes your kitchen uniquely yours?

Nothing really.

10. Are you a crafty person?

Crafty, yes. Artsy, no.

11. What is your favorite traditional picnic or bbq (cookout) food?

The first hamburgers of the season off the grill but after that it would be hubby's infamous pulled pork BBQ!

12. Name one leisurely activity you enjoyed over Labor Day Weekend.

Going up North to visit the grandgirls.

1. Please share one memory of your high school graduation. Pics would be great!

I actually graduated in January and started college. I did go back for the graduation ceremony so it was good to see lots of friends. There was lots of goofiness before the ceremony and some major partying afterward that I'd really rather forget. I also reconciled with one friend who I'd been at odds with over a boy (not the friend in the photo).

2. What is one "emergency use" item you keep in your vehicle at all times?

Just one? I turn into a Boy Scout ("Be Prepared") when it comes to my car because I've always spent a lot of time in it. I have jumper cables that my son bought me years ago (this has an awesome, sweet story to go with it that I should share sometime) and a first aid kit.
There is also always some kind of food! There is always something to eat in my car. Great for traffic backups that last hours because of a wreck or if you get stuck in the snow. In the winter I always keep a candle and lighter for snow emergencies too.

3. In your region, do you celebrate graduation open houses? Addendum: (If so,) how many open houses/bridal showers/weddings are on your upcoming events calendar?

Yes and they've become more and more elaborate for high school grads. It used to be just a cake and maybe some snacks with crepe paper and balloons. Now there is all that and scrapbooks and posters of accomplishments and photo albums and...
Just one or two this summer. Generally our family has moved on to the baby shower phase.

4. Tell me one truth you believe about motherhood. The goal is to raise kind, independent, productive adults - not obedient children.

5. What was the last thing you broke? My fingernail.

6. On average, how many pieces of junk mail do you receive daily? One or two except during campaign season. I sent letters a year or so ago to be taken off most junk mail lists - less trash for me, more trees for everyone.

7. Do you like to shop by catalog? Sometimes, if the product and company are familiar. I don't like to buy clothes that way though. I also order WAY less from Penney's since they changed their catalog return policy.

8. Is lawn maintenance at your house a "his job," a "her job" or "his/her job" or "that's why we have teenagers" job? It's 30%/70% his/her. He mows most of the time but I do most of the rest.

9. Which room would you like to redecorate in your home?

Apparently the dining room. Wouldn't have been my first choice but the rest of my family hates my dining room.

10. Do you read a newspaper regularly, or do you read most of your news on line?

Neither. I read the newspaper and online news on a hit & miss basis. I watch the news on TV but that is usually more than enough negative information for me each day.

11. Do you believe everything happens for a reason?

Absolutely. Sometimes we may not understand the reason this side of Heaven but there is something that can be learned, used, enjoyed or appreciated in every circumstance if we look hard enough or wait long enough.

12. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?

Definitely doing the right things. Not bragging, just saying. Most people who know me would agree that this is true. Also, I am definitely NOT a perfectionist needing everything done "just right".

1. Ever had any run-ins with the "library police?"

Nope. The video rental police, however, that's a different story.

2. Do you have a special organizational plan and place for wrapping paper, gift bags, etc., or do you just purchase whatever you need as you give gifts?

I have a tote with bags, tissue, bows and a few boxes. I also have a tall container for wrapping paper. I try to buy the stuff when it's on sale and I usually reuse the bags I'm given.

3. Have you ever been in (first-hand witness) a natural disaster?

Thankfully NO! My closest relation to natural disasters has been the whole "getting struck by lightening" incident, experiencing a tremor when I lived in California, and all the "go to the basement" episodes that living in Indiana in the Spring creates.

4. What's your favorite Barry Manilow song?

Okay, I honestly almost threw up when I read this question. There was a time, long ago when I didn't abhor Barry Manilow music. That was before I worked for a lady who was in her mid 30's and was seriously a Manilow groupie (think screaming pre-teen girls at a Jonas Bros. concert). If he was playing anywhere within a days drive she went to see him and it was all she talked about for weeks before and after. She played his music continuously. Honestly, if I never heard another one of his songs for the rest of my life that would be fine with me. Prior to this Manilow torture I'd have probably picked Mandy.

5. What's the best costume you've ever worn?

I really don't know. I've been everything from a ladybug to Liza Minnelli in Cabaret. The worst, though, was when I was a kid and dressed up as a robot made out of a large cardboard box spray painted silver. It was a cute costume but I fell up and down a lot of porch steps that year.

6. Which do you use more often, the dictionary or the thesaurus?

Thesaurus - I'm pretty good at spelling (not typing) and knowing what words mean so I rarely use a dictionary. However (after all, all the same, anyhow, be that as it may, but, despite, for all that, in spite of, nonetheless, notwithstanding, on the other hand, though, withal, yet ), I will consult a thesaurus to keep from using the same word over and over.

7. What's your favorite breakfast food?

Pecan pancakes with real maple syrup.

8. Have you ever purchased anything from an infomercial?

Not that I can think of.

9. Have you ever crawled through a window?

Yep, to break in to my own house when I locked myself out. Broke a window once for the same reason.

10. Do you believe in love at first sight?

Lust at first sight or like at first sight-YES. Love - NO.

11. How many pairs of jeans do you own?

Own or own and that fit? Nine pair that I can wear (this includes one I don't really like and one I can only wear at home) and three pair that I'm hoping to get back into!

12. If someone were going to bake a cake to honor/represent you, what would it be? (Think creatively, like Duff and Crew on "Ace of Cakes.")

Well, since I think Duff can do almost anything I'd say a "travels" cake that also incorporated being a Mom and Grammy. I'd love something with mini scenes representing each of the 50 states that included taking the kids to Disney World when they were little and to see Rock City. There could be scenes of hubby and I in Alaska and New Orleans and scenes of other places that I hope to be able to take the grandbabies some day.

1. How do you feel about "Gladiator" sandals, also called "Roman" or "Jesus" sandals? A fashion yea or nay?

I think a few of the styles are cute but it's almost impossible for me to find any that will fit and not drive me crazy. It's the same problem I have with short boots-with my short legs the top ends up gouging my calf muscle.

2. What is your favorite pizza?

It's a toss up between a Pizza King royal feast and a Papa Murphy's Herb Chicken Mediterranean.

3. There are plans in the works to sell roughly 1,000 items from Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. This means you could buy Picard's chair for your family room. If not a Star Trek item, what prop, background, set, etc. from what TV or movie would you buy if you could? [Ex: Hurley's "I Love my Shih tzu" shirt from LOST, the plantation home "Tara" from Gone With the Wind, or Tracy's tambourine from the Partridge Family.]

Trader Joes black bean dip with blue corn tortilla chips with flax seed has overtaken hummus and Stacy's pita chips.

I don't know who said it but a friend just posted this on Facebook: The strength of a man isn't in the deep tone of his voice- it's in the gentle words he whispers. The strength of a man isn't how many buddies he has- it's how good of buddies he is with his children. The strength of a man isn't in how respected he is at work- it's in how respected he is at home. The strength of a man isn't in the weight he can lift- it's in the burdens he can carry.

Seriously! I decided to do RD today as a distraction from all the relationship issues that I and others close to me are having at the moment. Therefore, I refuse to answer on the grounds that it might incriminate/overwhelm/irritate me or others who read my blog.

2. Why is it called a "drive-through" if you have to stop? (Real question: What was the last food/drink you purchased at a drive-through?)

It was McDonalds on the way home from Chicago a couple weeks ago. I rarely go to a drive-through anymore but it was late and we were all hungry. I had the Mac Snack. I justified it by the fact that it had to be better than eating an entire Big Mac and it took care of my once a year craving for one.

3. As I type this, the Butler Bulldogs are getting ready to play in the NCAA championship game. Every Hoosier is hysterical about this except me. So in honor of the Bulldogs ... what is your favorite breed of dog? (I tried.)

4. If you had to move to a state besides the one you currently live in, where would you move?

North Carolina

5. If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

Honestly, I can't think of anything. My parents weren't perfect but they were very good, loving, and consistent. At age 14 to 18 I'm sure I'd have wanted to change a lot of things but now that I'm older and wiser...

6. Who's the funniest person you know?

That's a tie between you, Lidna, and my daughter Shantelle who could probably make a good living as a stand up comedian.

7. Did you get enough sleep last night?

Yes - I always sleep better when I can have the windows open.

8. What's the first thing you thought about this morning?

I usually pray first thing in the morning before I get out of bed but my very first thought this morning was about what the weather was going to be like today.

9. Grilled or Fried? --HONESTLY

It depends completely on what I'm eating. Almost all meats as an entree I prefer grilled. However, if I'm having a salad with chicken on it I prefer that fried. I know, I know.

10. Are you afraid of the dark?

Nope, although I did get a little nervous the night I was out at 2:00 a.m. watching a meteor shower (so had all the outside lights turned off) and heard some kind of animal in the woods.

11.When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

At what age? I remember wanting to be a dancer - then I took lessons and found out that wasn't one of my talents. I wanted to be a nurse - then I volunteered at the hospital... I went through a "teacher" phase because that's what a lot of my family does. In high school and college I wanted to be a journalist. Through all of that I always wanted to be a Mom and that (and being a Grammy) is still my favorite thing to be.

12. If you had one word to describe yourself , what would you choose?

Genuine.

Flashback Friday #2

THE QUESTION
When was your first date? You can choose either your first date ever or your first date with your spouse - or both! How old were you? What did you do/where did you go? Did anything memorable - either good or embarrassing? If it was your first date ever, did you continue to date that person? If so, how long? If you are sharing the story of the first date with the person you married, did you know then that he/she was "the one" or did it take a longer for love to bloom? Any other memories you wish to share about those wonderfully awkward first dates?!

THE ANSWER
As a teen I always went for older guys. My first date was just prior to my Freshman year in high school. I'd met the guy over the summer at the local swim club. We'd been talking on the phone and seeing each other at the pool occasionally where I was a member and he sometimes came as a visitor with a friend. The pool had an end of summer dance for teens and I remember dancing to "Stairway to Heaven". We also, shortly before or after that (I really don't remember), went to King's Island with my older sister and her boyfriend. We ended up dating for almost two years but the relationship did not survive the "he's in college, she's still in high school" problem.

Side note - many years later after my divorce I had another first date at King's Island. This is not a typical choice for a first date and certainly wasn't my idea either time, but it does give you lots of time to get to know someone.

My first date with my husband was at a Chinese restaurant where we sat in a booth across from each other and caught up on our lives (we'd been friends since high school but hadn't seen much of each other for a number of years). The funniest part was when we opened our fortune cookies my fortune read "The answer to all your problems is right in front of you".

1. On a scale of 1-10, how superstitious are you, honestly?

I'd say about a 3. I mean, walking under a ladder is just dumb and I've owned a black cat that crossed my path multiple times a day. On the other hand, I will pick up a penny or, if I ever got the chance, would kiss the Blarney Stone. However, it's a "can't hurt" type thing more so than thinking it will really make a difference.

2. Julius Caesar is quoted as saying, "I came, I saw, I conquered." Which circumstance or experience of yours does this saying best describe?

My fear of heights maybe? I've been up in the St. Louis Arch, on top of Stone Mountain, and in the cable car that went up the side of the mountain in Gatlinburg where the "driver/guide" felt the need to tell us exactly how many feet off the ground we were and that if the cable broke we'd hit that ground in less than four seconds!

3. If I peeked in on your day like a mischievous little leprechaun, at what time would I most likely find you blogging?

It's usually either the middle of the day or way late at night.

4. Re springing forward for Daylight Saving Time, is there anything you've ever been really early or really late for?

I got the time mixed up and we were late for my son's preschool graduation 20+ years ago. I still feel awful about it.

5. What are you most looking forward to concerning Spring?

Planting my garden, definitely!

6. Shamrocks are the national flower of Ireland and are picked on St. Patrick's Day and worn on the lapel or shoulder. Do you wear green on St. Patty's Day?

Every year.

7. One of Caesar's assassins, Casca, said, "But, for my own part, it was Greek to me," which of course means he didn't understand something. Probably his own lines in the play. Anyway, what is something that is "Greek to you," something incomprehensible or indecipherable?

Computer programming and technical stuff. I do pretty well with software/ user end of things but not at all with the "how the computer works" kind of things. If you doubt that, ask my friend Norm or my son-in-law. They'll whole-heartedly confirm it.

8. Is March behaving more like a lion or a lamb where you live?

Yes - It's Indiana, need I say more?

Wow, I feel like I should say something productive like exercise, or charitable like volunteer, or spiritual like pray. Realistically, I'd probably want to spend that hour doing something fun with someone I love.

Here is the week one prompt and my response.

How and when did you learn to drive? Do you have any particular memories associated with getting your driver license? How old were you when you got your first car and what was it? Who paid for it?

Way back in the day (ba-dump-bump)driver's education was offered through your high school every summer. I took this summer class shortly after I turned 15. There was classroom time including a terrifying drunk driving filmstrip. Remember those? Then we drove with an instructor and two other students. I remember being very nervous - more about the other two drivers in my car than of my own driving. After passing the class you still had to wait until you were 16 years and one month old to get your license. In the meantime you had a beginner's permit and could drive with any adult(over 18) licensed driver in order to get more experience. My parent's rule was that I could get my license when they thought I was ready, not necessarily one month after my 16th birthday. During that time I drove often with Daddy. He took me to the school parking lot to practice on the ice during the winter. He was an extremely patient man and let me drive often. Early in the Spring before I turned 16 we were driving down a familiar road that had a small hill. At the top of the hill in the oncoming lane was a garbage truck that had stopped to pick up garbage. As I started up the hill a car came flying over the hill around the truck! I immediately slammed on the brakes as I pulled to the very edge of the road. I was terrified! At that moment I wasn't sure I ever wanted to drive again. At that same moment, as I sat there shaking, my Dad said, "You're ready to get your license now."

Daddy had a 1967 Camaro (it's still in the family) that, at that time, was just an older car that all of us girls drove. The first car I bought (and paid for)was also a Camaro, a beautiful silver one, when I was 18. It is still my favorite make of car although I'm not really "in love" with the new 2010 style.

1. How old is the oldest pair of shoes in your closet?

There is this pair I bought for my trip to Hawaii which makes them 12 years old. There is another pair I may have had before that but I'm not sure since they weren't purchased for a specific occasion.

2. Did you buy Girl Scout cookies this year? If so, what variety?

I'm trying to lose some weight so I did not. Hubby, however, bought five boxes: Do-Si-Do's, Thin Mints (which are in the freezer) and Dulce de Leche.

3. Do you know how to ballroom dance? If not, would you like to?

No and yes.

4. Were you a responsible child/teenager?

Define responsible. I got good grades, did my homework, never wrecked the car, etc. but I was rebellious.

5. How many of this year's Oscar-nominated movies did you see?

I think three, although three more are in my Netflix queue.

6. If you're going to have a medical procedure done, such as having blood drawn, is it easier for you to watch someone else having the procedure done or have it done yourself?

Neither or either depending on the procedure and the other person.

7. What is your favorite day of the week and why?

Sunday - I love going to church, worshipping and getting a priority adjustment when needed. Every other Sunday is Life Group with great friends that feel more like family.

8. Do you miss anyone right now?

I miss the someone that someone used to be.

9. Do hospitals make you queasy?

Not queasy so much as anxious. I really prefer to avoid them.

10. At which store would you like to max-out your credit card. Not that you ever would, you responsible person, you.

Wow, that's a tough choice. New York & Co. and Hobby Lobby both came to mind but, truth be told, I'd more likely max it out at Toys-R-Us/Babies-R-Us!

11. Are you true to the brand names of products/items?

It totally depends on the product. I want Kraft cheese, Penzey's spices, Purina dog food, Charmin t.p. and Ice Mountain water (I know, I know - my "green" downfall). However, I'll buy whatever laundry detergent, soda, or canned/frozen veggies that are on sale.

12. Which is more difficult: looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into someone’s eyes when he/she is telling you how he/she feels?

Definitely the latter.

I'd say even, although I have no idea why.

Probably a 2. If I think people are talking about me it has way more to do with insecurity than thinking I'm "talk" worthy.

Definitely talkative. No contemplation needed for that answer!

4. How lucky do you consider yourself?

This one is hard to answer since I think most things people call luck really are either blessings or hard work. It a coin toss kind of luck I'd say my luck is pretty 50/50 (ba-dump-dump).

5. What is the subject of your favorite post that you've written?

I don't really have an answer for this one. Posts about issues are the ones I feel most compelled to write although they aren't usually "fun" to read. Many of my favorite posts are actually photo posts for Wordless Wednesday or Sky Watch Friday.

6. Describe March weather where you live in three words.

Wet, cold, and windy.

7. How apt are you at detecting blarney when you hear it? (Smooth talk, flattery)

I'm usually aware of when someone is being disingenuous.

8. How "green" are you, environmentally speaking?

If I were giving myself a grade I'd say a B or B- probably. I try to be "green" but sometimes convenience wins out.

9. What is your favorite song this week?

I have a young friend that I wish would here and believe this song. She and the song have been on my mind all week.

10. You are walking along and see a coin on the ground. What denomination does it have to be before you will stop to pick it up?

Generally speaking I'd say a penny. However, if it's in a mud puddle or is complicated to get to for some reason it probably would need to be a quarter.

1. If you could compete in one Olympic event (not necessarily winter sports) what would it be?

Synchronized swimming or some summer sport so I could travel someplace warm.

2. Do remember a specific Olympic moment from the past?

The moment that comes to mind is as a young teen watching Mark Spitz swim butterfly for one of his seven gold medals. My parents were having a church group party and it and my viewing of the Olympics were cut short by the news that my cousin Pam, who was also one of my best friends, had been killed in an auto accident.

3. Have you ever known anyone who competed in the Olympics?

My son competed in the Junior Olympics in karate. That's as close as I can get.

4. If everyday activities were Olympic-worthy, which activity would you have a gold medal in?

Gold medal = Doubles Cooking & Entertaining with hubby as a partner.
Silver medal = Gardening - would have won gold before going organic.
Bronze medal = Frugality & Greenness

5. Do you know anything about your ethnic heritage?

On my Dad's side it goes back to a French boy who married a Dutch girl and their daughter eloped with an Irishman. Scandalous!

I really don't. Unless I'm sick, If I do sleep late I always get up feeling like I've wasted half the day.

Ireland - I've always been intrigued by the country and since I've learned it's part of my heritage, I'm even more interested in visiting there someday.

Back to the Olympics - what is your favorite part (ie. opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies, individual events, medal presentation)?

I enjoy watching the opening ceremonies but then am a little frustrated by the amount of money spent on them. I mean, the amount they spent this year alone (estimated at over $100 million) would rebuild most of Haiti! I do like when an American wins gold and they play the national anthem at medal presentation.

12. What is your favorite meal at your favorite restaurant?

Expensive restaurant = Something different each time from Oceanaire. I had the monkfish last time and it was yummy.
Local restaurant = Bar-b-q Ranch Chicken Salad at Scotty's Brewhouse with a side of Loaded Waffle Fries.

Slightly grumpy because I'm annoyed that I'm sick. Mostly, however, I just want to be left alone until I feel better.

3. What is one domestic skill you wish you could improve?

Cleaning - I don't know that I really need to improve the skill, just wish I didn't hate doing it so much. I like to organize but with cleaning it seems like it's an endless task that never shows unless you don't do it.

4. Do you decorate your home for Valentine's Day?

A little - I have some Valentine's candy dishes I use and I bought a new welcome sign for the door this year.

5. What song is on your mind today?

6. Do you prefer contemporary movies or classic?

I prefer good movies - most of which are classic with a few contemporary thrown in.

7. How well do you "compartmentalize" your feelings? For example, how well can you put aside a really trying moment to deal with the immediate situation which is not related to the trying moment, e.g., putting aside a tiff with your spouse in order to finish wallpapering a room.

I'm reading two different things here, in my mind at least. (is that compartmentalizing?) I generally don't compartmentalize well in that I'm not good at pretending I'm fine if I'm not or that I'm in a good mood if I'm having a bad day. However, I am very good at doing tasks when I'm angry or sad or upset as a stress reliever for the pent up energy. Now, if what you were alluding to was wallpapering with your spouse in the midst of a tiff - well, lets just say someone could get glued to the wall!

8. What is the first thing that attracted you to your spouse? (Or if you're single, to your best friend.)

His laugh and sense of humor.

9. When was the last time your heart raced?

Yesterday, shoveling snow - but I'm guessing that wasn't exactly what you meant...

10. What are your memories of Valentine's Day at school?

Making a Valentine's box at home and then the "best box" competition at school. Okay, admittedly it is probably because I won more than once but I really loved making the box with Mom and deciding what we were going to make. One year we made a record player (yes, I'm that old) complete with a heart shaped record. Another year we made a typewriter with all the keys cut out in heart shapes and the paper coming out said Happy Valentine's Day.

11. If you were going to receive candy for Valentine's Day, which would you prefer?

As in which kind of candy? Optimal would be Lowery's white chocolate covered cherries - and if they could make them without calories, that would be great!

If the question was supposed to be flowers or candy then my answer would be a live flower I can transplant later or seeds for sewing in the Spring.

Yes. Originally I hesitated to use them if I didn't want to send money to that charity. However, they continue to send them over and over so now I use them.

Sunset and also after dark on a clear night. I love to take photos of the sunsets and really like to star gaze.

Yes, and it's all your fault! I'm lost on LOST.

9. When you sneeze, do you go big, or do you do that weird “heenh!” sound that makes people think you’re going to blow your brains out? Any other variation we should know about?

Depends on where I am - at home, outside, etc. I just sneeze. In church, the theater, etc. I try to keep it to a quiet "shew".

10. Do you still read an actual newspaper that you hold in your hands, or do you get your news elsewhere?

I usually only read the Sunday paper and I read the "real" one. My degree is in journalism and I still enjoy the smell of newsprint. Ya, I know, I'm weird.

11. Are you a good speller?

Yes, although not a good typist. I won a spelling competition sponsored by Webster's Dictionary one time at a conference.

12. At what time each day do you start thinking about Lost lunch?

LOST - this week it has been shortly after I wake up. Lunch - usually about 10:30 a.m.

1. How good are you at delaying gratification?

I think I'm fairly good at it. I am probably better at waiting for bigger or more important things than smaller ones.

2. Maybe a marshmallow wouldn't be too difficult a temptation for you. What food (or anything else) would be most tempting?

Travel is definitely my biggest temptation. In the food category it would be pizza and chocolate.

3. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being saintly) how patient are you?

It totally depends on what it is I need to be patient about so I'd say overall it would be about a five.

4. Have you ever waited for something in life only to be disappointed upon realization of the goal/object/etc.?

More than once.

5. Are you a person who takes shortcuts?

Okay, all my answers seem very "in the middle" today. There are some areas where I will definitely take shortcuts (ie. hem tape over sewing) and other areas where I wouldn't even consider it.

6. Which line is hardest to wait in?

Easy -the line for the restroom!

7. Did you wait to discover the gender of your unborn child until its birth?

This is going to reveal the age of some of us you know! They did an ultrasound with my son but the technology was such that they still were only right about 70% of the time so my doctor refused to indicate which gender he thought the baby might be.

8. Are you more patient with children or the elderly?

Definitely with children - my patience with elderly people depends a lot on the situation and their attitude/temperament.

9. Did you ever sneak a peek at a present?

Only once because then it was such a disappointment when I did receive it.

10. What is the longest you've ever waited for anything?

I'm still waiting...

That would be me.

1. So I was thinking about how Jon Bon Jovi never seems to age much. His hair is smaller nowadays, but he still manages to look like a boy somehow. And then that made me think of the story of Dorian Gray. Question: If you physically lock in one age for yourself, which would you choose and why?

Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually it would definitely be 39. If I take out spiritually it would be 36.

2. What is the best dish that you cook or bake (your piece de resistance?)

I'm going to say my cinnamon rolls although it's a tough call between that and my lasagna.

3. When you feel blue, what is one strategy you use to help yourself back to normal?

How blue? Slightly blue = chocolate or cheesecake. Very blue requires travel!

4. When was the last time you danced in public?

My nephew's wedding last summer. I love to dance but don't get the opportunity to very often.

5. Do you consider yourself a realist or dreamer?

A realistic dreamer!

6. As a parent, what is one thing that you have done well?

I think I did a good job of remembering each child was different with different personalities, needs, interests, etc. and, therefore, needed different kinds and amounts of support, encouragement, discipline, etc.

7. Which is your favorite character on the Andy Griffith show?

Aunt Bee

8. On a scale of 1-10, how much do you know about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?

I'd say about a five.

Other drivers who seem oblivious to the fact that there are other people on the road.

I'm going to say green. I've been on the go most of the day and have gotten several things accomplished and had lunch with great friends so it feels like a positive, productive day.

11. If your spouse were an animal, which would he/she be?

Really?? You're making my brain hurt. After much thought a few options came to mind but I think I'll go with horse.

12. What activity takes up the bulk of your time on an average day?

Which day? Monday's it's laundry. Thursday's it is Isaac. Some days it is this computer with all its blogs and games and FACEBOOK!

1. When was the last time you craved a food--what was it, and did you cave?

About 30 seconds ago - chocolate - completely caved!

As is probably obvious by the above answer, M&M's

Yes.

4. How long does it take you to really wake up in the morning?

Five or ten minutes. I start my morning by stretching before I get out of bed so I'm pretty awake by the time I hit the floor. Hubby on the other hand...

5. Have you ever been on a cruise? If not, would you like to?

Yes, twice. Loved, loved, loved the cruise to Cozumel. The Alaska cruise not as much. Of course that may have had to do with the 104 degree temperature I was running for a couple of days of that cruise and the continuous rain. It is, in my opinion, a great all inclusive type vacation. Lots to see, lots to do, little to plan/organize.

6. Who is your favorite actress?

I don't think I can narrow it down to one. Gina Davis, Julia Roberts, and Sandra Bullock all come to mind.

7. People who just enjoy being mean are something that I will just never understand.

8. How much of a technology junkie are you?

Slightly. I like a lot of the new tech gadgets, I just hate learning how to use them!

9. Do you enjoy selecting greeting cards for people, or is it more of a cultural "have to" for you?

I love finding just the right card. I often buy them way in advance because I find the perfect one for one person while I'm looking for one for someone else.

10. When was the last time you got a new style/haircut?

About six months ago and I love it!

11. What do you enjoy shopping for most?

Anything for the grandkids.

12. What's the last thing you think of before you leave the house?

I go through a mental list of if I have everything I need to take with me and check that the dog is inside. Then I tell her (the dog) to watch the house and I leave.

Friends - not necessarily gross but I would not be likely to share. Family members -It depends on exactly who it is and the situation. I might share drinks with my hubby. I've tasted other family member's drinks or taken a drink of theirs to take medicine or something but not on a regular basis.

2. What have you learned this year? (You didn't see a question of that weight coming, did you? At least not for #2.)

3. When do you dismantle the Christmas decorations?

Sometime during the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

5. How do you feel about winter (after Christmas)?

I'm over it. Once Christmas is over I'd really prefer sunny and 70 degrees thanks!

Not in January. However, I am looking forward to grandbaby #4 coming in early March.

Drama (as in "way too much drama") except when grandson Isaac is around. Then it is usually an action/comedy.

Lately I haven't been blogging every day. It was all down hill once vacation started. Usually though it is probably about 1-2 hours.

11. Who runs your household?

Not Me! Either hubby or the dog are in charge depending on the day.

That I will figure out what the next phase of my life involves and that God will direct me to it.

A Moldy End to the Year

As the year draws to a close many people take time to look back and evaluate the past. Many make resolutions to do or not do something in the future. As I've talked to people recently, and as I've been doing some evaluating myself, I've been reminded of a great analogy a friend once shared (thanks Mary). It is one I have often revisited and also shared with others more than once. It goes something like this:

It's like that thing in the back of your refrigerator. You know, that thing that you once enjoyed and wanted to save to have more later. It's been there now for a long time and you know it's moldy. You know it's not good anymore and it's not good for you. You know you should do something with it. But, it's safe there in that familiar air tight bowl and if you open it it will be ugly and smelly and nasty until you either clean it up or just get rid of it.

So what is the moldy thing in your life that either needs cleaned up or thrown out completely? Is it a job? Is it a bad habit or addiction? Is it a relationship? Is it an arrogant sense of entitlement? Is it your unrealistic expectations? Is it your need for immediate gratification? Is it your self-righteousness?

What is that "thing" that is not best for you, or you at your best, but is comfortable or familiar so it erroneously makes you feel safe?

May I encourage you to get rid of it if you need to - or clean it out and clean it up if you need to. Start your year with your refrigerator clean and there will be more room for all the healthy stuff and new tastes life has to offer.

Random Dozen - Christmas Edition

1. Gingerbread: For or against? Discuss.

Generally "for". I don't really like gingerbread cookies but I have had some delicious gingerbread cake. I love looking at gingerbread houses people have made (or gingerbread churches in the case of some talented people). This year I am building my first gingerbread house, soooooo, after that I may change my vote to "against"!

2. Is it important to you to always stay (live) close to family?

Yes. I love having most of our family within easy driving distance. I'd hate being more than an hour or so away from everyone.

I think Santa would be a fine choice. He is generous, jolly, and encourages people to be good. He should give up that pipe though.

Miracle on 34th Street - "you have to believe".

5. Is there a particular Christmas song that you're enjoying now? Any that you're tired of?

Mary Did You Know is one of my favorites. I never get tired of it or Silent Night. Tired of that Wham song already - sorry Lid...

6. What is your favorite way to remember those less fortunate at Christmastime?

Donating to charity has always been a part of Christmas for us each year. When the kids were young they chose toys to give to Toys for Tots. Now that everyone is grown, each year we donate to a charity or charities as part of their Christmas. Some years it has been one charity and other years different ones for the guys & girls or a different one for each depending on their personal interests.

7. Does it upset you to see "Xmas" instead of Christmas? How about "Happy Holidays" etc., instead of "Merry Christmas?"

I definitely prefer Merry Christmas but am not offended by Happy Holidays. I am, however, offended by Xmas. It is at best lazy and at worst removing Christ - the real point of it all.

8. How many Christmas programs are you attending this month?

Just Christmas Eve services at church - the kids are too old to be in any programs and the grands are too young.

9. Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Any chance of that dream becoming a reality?

Yes and yes! I'm hopeful that we will have snow this year.

10. Tell me about a Christmas present you received as a child. Pics are always nice.

Two come to mind. The first was my bouncing horse. I must have been about three or four when I got it and I still have it. The only photo I have would be inappropriate since I was apparently doing my Lady Godiva imitation! The second was several years later when I got the dollhouse I'd been wanting. The best part was that the one I got had a swimming pool and backyard patio furniture with it too. Wooo hooo, my doll family was rich!

11. How many Christmas parties are you attending this month?

Two - or three if you count Christmas Eve at my in-laws.

12. How do you keep yourself centered on the significance of Christmas?

We listen to lots of Christmas music and my devotions for December are focused on Christmas.

Two for Tuesday - Tiger

I typically avoid media topics but several conversations ( both participated in and overheard) have led me to write this post. Let me say first that there is absolutely NO excuse for Tiger's infidelity. Let me repeat - NONE!

In response to the news about Tiger I have heard several people comment, both male and female, "but he has a beautiful wife" or something similar. What exactly are we saying then?

1. If his wife were ugly or plain then it would be okay? Or more understandable? Or easier to accept? Really! This misses two points. First is she were ugly or plain then she would have been that when he married her unless there had been some sort of disfiguring accident. Second, male infidelity rarely has anything at all to do with the wife. That being said...

2. His wife is beautiful. This does not, however, mean she is kind or supportive or a good wife in any way. While this would still in no way excuse his behavior, I am amazed at the way we assumed positive character traits on someone based soley on their looks. Kind of like assuming that because some one is a great athlete, a golfer let's say, that they are a good person and appropriate role model.

1. Which physical trait do you now accept--maybe not love, but accept--and no longer feel extremely self-conscious about?

My nose - I still hate it and think it is way to big but I no longer consider the possibility of plastic surgery.

2. This week Meredith Baxter Birney, best known as the mom on the favorite 80s sitcom "Family Ties" came out of the closet, which led me to formulate this question: Who do you think is/was the best TV mom?

3. Do you speak any foreign languages? Are there any you'd like to learn?

I know a few words in Spanish and a few in sign language but not enough of either to have a conversation -just enough to maybe ask or answer very simple questions.

4. Who is your personal hero?

I'm not much in to heros. Anytime you put someone on a pedestal, they are bound to fall off. There are, however, several people that I think very highy of and respect because of their integrity and the way they live their lives. A few who come to mind are my Mom, Billy Graham, and Tony Dungy.

5. What is one holiday food that you find extremely difficult to resist over- indulging in?

My ex mother-in-law's chocolate mousse - she still sends it to me via my kids. That and Chex mix by the pound - the real homemade stuff, not what you buy in a bag at the store.

6. Tell me about a Christmas decoration that has special meaning or sentimental value.

All the miniature ornaments on the tree below are special to me. They are ones that my kids and other special people picked out for me over the years especially for this tiny tree.

7. How do you feel about snow?

Love it if I'm inside. Love it if it's warm enough to build a snowman or go sledding. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Hate it on the road and on my driveway and sidewalk.

8. On average, how many hours of sleep do you get each night? Not that I'm jealous of any number over three or anything.

When I was working it was about six. Now that I'm not, it's closer to seven and a half.

9. Tell me about your first crush.

Um, sitting here trying to decide if I can't come up with an answer to this because my memory is on "pause" or because I was so boy crazy when I was young that there are multiple answers to the question.

10. You're stuck in a room for 2 hours with only a chalkboard and chalk. What will you write/draw?

If there is colored chalk I will probably draw a picture, some type of landscape scene. If I only have white chalk I'm more likely to write something and also doodle. What I'd write would probably depend on why I was stuck in the room.

11. Do you dress for the current temp or for the day's forecast?

Unless I plan to be gone all day I usually dress for the current temperature/weather conditions. If I'll be out all day I may dress for the forecast but either way I usually wear layers so I can add or shed as needed. I think that's second nature when you live in Indiana and the weather changes ever five minutes.

12. Favorite Christmas movie is?

Miracle on 34th Street - the original, preferably in black & white.

Feastcation 2009 - The Food

So we have arrived home after our wonderful vacation which was mostly planned around restaurants! Here is a sampling of what we enjoyed during our 2971.4 miles, 12 state tour.

Neely's Bar-B-Que - Memphis

Our first stop on the cuisine adventure landed us at Neely's. We enjoyed the sausage and cheese appetizer followed by a sampler of their bar-b-que which included pulled pork, ribs, beef brisket, and turkey. Hubby liked the brisket and I enjoyed the fall off the bone ribs. The turkey was just okay and we both thought hubby's pulled pork was better. The coleslaw had a spicy taste that was very different and good. The atmosphere was not what we had expected but it was clearly their original restaurant, functional and no fuss. I'm glad we went so that we can say we've been there, I would probably not go back for a second visit.

Emeril's - New Orleans

This was undoubtedly the best meal we've ever eaten. Everything was perfect. The food was amazing in both taste and presentation. The service and atmosphere were excellent. I the Baby Spinach Salad with Fresh Strawberries, Goat Cheese, Spiced Almonds, Crisp Potato and Warm Chourice-Pimenton Vinaigrettefollowed by Pan Seared Filet of Beef with Creamy Mascarpone Polenta, Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Wilted Swiss Chard, Confit Tomato and Goat Cheese. Delicious doesn't even begin to describe it. A regular at the restaurant suggested the pork chop to hubby explaining that it was the dish that the chefs all tried to outdo each other on. It was the thickest pork chop I have ever seen and hubby thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert I had the dark chocolate torte and hubby had the pecan pie with bourbon chocolate ice cream. All I can say is that if you ever get to New Orleans Emeril's flagship restaurant is not to be missed!

The Court of Two Sister - New Orleans

On Sunday morning we decided to check out this jazz brunch. It was delightful. The music was enjoyable and the food was delicious and plentiful. Eggs Benedict and omelets were made to order and the rest of the food was served buffet style. It included multiple types of meats, veggies, salads, and desserts. The sweet potatoes were to die for and the rolls melted in your mouth. There was a chicken salad that was unlike anything I've ever tasted and I'd love to have the recipe.

Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse - New Orleans

This restaurant was recommended to us and was our first big disappointment. I chose the special, which I ordered medium and received a steak that was somewhere between medium well and well done. Other than dessert, we've had better meals at chain steakhouses for a third of the price. The service was adequate but nothing special and the atmosphere was very dark and heavy. There are numerous restaurants to pick from in New Orleans so I wouldn't suggest picking this one.

Mothers - New Orleans

We were anxious to try this diner after seeing it on TV. The show was clear that this was a small family owned eatery so we knew what to expect. It was everything we expected and more. The sandwiches were ginormous and very tasty. I had the "Ferdi" and enjoyed every bite of it that I could manage to eat. We were fortunate to be visiting in the slow tourist season so we only had to wait in a short line - not the usual "out the door and around the corner" line. The service was highly efficient and friendly. This is definitely on my "places to eat" on a return visit list.

Cafe du Monde - New Orleans

This is on everyones "must visit" list and I agree, it is a must. The beignets are wonderful, although messy, and hubby enjoyed the cafe au late. I tried it but since I'm not a coffee drinker I'm sure I didn't properly appreciate it. It was fun to eat in the outdoor cafe and just enjoy the weather and people watching.

Thanksgiving Dinner at the Shotts - Florida

The next meal worth noting was Thanksgiving dinner with family at my niece's house. The food was good, the weather was nice, and the company was great! I'm afraid you won't be able to try this particular stop on our feastcation so you'll just have to take my word on it that it was delicious - especially the pecan pumpkin pie.

Paula Deen's - Savannah

This was our last official feastcation stop and it did not disappoint. We had the buffet lunch and also ordered the fried green tomato appetizer off the menu. The tomatoes were absolutely scrumptious! The buffet was basic home cookin' comfort food, nothing fancy, but all well prepared and tasty. Hubby and I each picked a different dessert so we could share both of them. I chose the banana pudding and it was the 2nd best I've ever had. Hubby got the sweet potato butter cake and it was heavenly!

The trip was great fun and we look forward to planning feastcation 2010. However, I do need to figure out how to make the trip without gaining almost five pounds!

I think our next adventure we will be heading to the east coast, the Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire area, so if you have any great restaurants to suggest please feel free to do so in the comments.

1. If you could master one sport, what would it be?

I think golf. I used to play at it some and really enjoyed it but was never very good. I'd like to at least be good enough to golf with hubby and it be enjoyable for both of us, not him standing around waiting for me to catch up.

2. When you make a major purchase, do you go with your gut instinct, or do you do research to make an informed decision?

Yes! I actually just made two major purchases and one I researched and researched and made myself crazy over. The other I went "wow, that's a great price and a brand I know so it should be fine". I'll try to remember to report back in a few months as to which process ended up causing the better decision.

3. There is an old kids' game that says you can find out what your movie star name would be by using your middle name as your first name and the name of the street you grew up on as your last. What is your movie star name?

They call me Jo, Jo Kettner.

4. Would you rather give up your favorite music or your favorite food?

I'm going with music, mostly because I like almost any kind of music so I might miss a specific kind/artist less. Although I like almost any kind of food too I can't think of any acceptable substitute for chocolate or pizza!

5. There are two types of banana preferences. One is pristine yellow, almost to the point of being green; the other is spotty and more ripe. Which is your preference?

Yellow with just a tinge of green at the base please.

6. Your favorite tree is?
Christmas!

And before I get all kinds of crazy comments, this is last year's tree.

7. On a scale of 1-10, how tech savvy are you?

Maybe a 5? Although both my son-in-law and my good friend, Norm, one of whom I call with every computer crisis, might give me a 2...

8. Has H1N1 touched your family?

Flu, yes. Tested and confirmed as H1N1, no. However, I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

9. Are you an analytical person, or do you just accept things the way they are without questioning or scrutinizing?

Oh, I'm the unquestioning type - pick your jaw up off your computer Lid - I'm being extremely sarcastic.

10. Is your personality more like that of a dog, cat, or Koala?

Definitely dog. I'm very loyal, like to play, and like my Gracie, want lots of attention or I might pout.

11. Do you keep in touch with friends you made years ago?

Until recently there were only a few that I kept in touch with. However, thanks to Facebook I'm in touch with a lot more of them now.

12. You are checking out at a grocery store. In the express lane, there are more people than the regular lanes, but of course, their load is less than those in the regular lanes. Which lane do you choose (assuming you qualify for the express lane) and why?

The self-check lane! It's always faster unless someone has coupons, or hasn't ever used it before, or doesn't know how to look up produce, or... Regardless of which lane I choose I know that if I am actually in a hurry the lane that I choose will ultimately be the slower one. Murphy's law is strongest in the grocery store.

1. What was the last song you listened to?

There is usually music in the background no matter what I'm doing so I'm answering this specifically as "listened to" and not just heard. The words to this song touched me as I can think of someone I know in almost every one of these situations.

2. Have you ever had “buyer’s remorse” over anything?

Yes, a few times. It usually has to do with shoes that look so cute but hurt so bad!

3. What is something in your life that you are thankful for now that you didn’t think you would be at the time of the event? (Something that seemed ill-timed, inconvenient or hurtful which turned out to be a good thing)

So many choices! I think the need to break things off with a guy I was engaged to who couldn't/wouldn't actually set a wedding date - and knowing that in doing so I was not only losing the relationship with him but also with his family and specifically his young daughter. It was very difficult at the time and I still wonder about her (what she's like now as a teenager) but ultimately it led me to my wonderful hubby and it had provided me with lessons that I would need to make our blended family work.

4. Do you watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade every year? If so, do you have a favorite float or balloon?

Watching the parade, with the smell of turkey baking in the background, is part of my Thanksgiving Day tradition. I look forward to seeing all the different balloons and have had different favorites over the years. Since I'm often doing things in the kitchen at the same time, the "don't miss" parts of the parade are the Rockettes and Santa Claus!

5. Share a quote, scripture, poem or lyric which has been an inspiration to you lately.

I share lots of these in my Sermon in a Sentence posts but the scripture that has always inspired me for as long as I can remember is Philippians 4:13 NKJV "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

6. This is meant to be a fun question, and this is a G-rated blog, but please share a “guilty pleasure,” something that you enjoy that’s probably not the most edifying, time-worthy or healthy thing you could be indulging in. Did I mention--G rating?

Okay, anymore I'm not sure this is G rated but it would be Days of Our Lives. I know, I know...

Easy question - "Alexander and Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst

Bags during the year but a little of both for Christmas. The ex and I used to have wrapping challenges at Christmas to see who could make the prettiest package with the fanciest bow. I have to admit, he usually won.

11. Share an after-school memory from when you were younger. What was your routine like on an average day?

Do you know how many years ago that was??? I seriously can't think of an answer for this one.

12. True story: Once, in a job interview, I was asked this question and told there would be no clarifying; I simply had to answer the question: “When you’re fishing, do you feel for the fish?” So what about you? When you're fishing, do you feel for the fish??

Nope, seems to work better if you just let them come to the worm. Feeling around for them is counterproductive.

The following is a poem written by my uncle, George Vise. It was written during WWII and is an eye opening reminder to all of us.
